Expressing Gratitude towards our ancestors.
We have taken all the things that we have today for granted. But without the generations that came before us, firstly we would not exist here; secondly, without their contribution we would not have all the things that we have today. So instead of taking them for granted, today is a day when we express our gratitude to all of them. It is done as a ritual to pay homage to one’s dead parents, but is actually an expression of gratitude for all those generations of ancestors who lived before us.
During this time, in the Indian subcontinent, new crops would have just begun to bear yield. So their first produce is offered to the ancestors as a mark of respect and thankfulness, by way of pinda, before the whole population breaks into celebration in the form of other festivals like Navaratri, Vijayadashami and Diwali.
Paksha is a 15 lunar day’s period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings.
According to South Indian Amavasyant calendar it falls in the lunar month of Bhadrapada beginning with the full moon day or day after full moon day.
According to North Indian Purnimant calendar this period falls in the lunar month of Ashwin beginning with the full moon day in Bhadrapada or next day of full moon day.
It is just nomenclature of lunar months which differs and both North Indians and South Indians perform Shraddha ritual on similar days.
This year it started from 27 September and is ending today.
As per Hinduism our Pitra( ancestors) paramount importance in our life sometimes more then your deity!!
But there is catch not all ancestors becomes Pitra, only those who were spiritual and were noble during their living days get Pitru Loka and from there they watch us and protect us.But due to fast and hectic life many of us are not able to perform the required rituals for Pitra and are ignoring them.
Many find it irrelevant nowdays and forgot that it’s cause of our ancestors we are here on earth now. It’s quite important to pay them respect and show gratitude.
Millions of people in India are present in banks of Holly rivers be it haridwar, rishikesh,Varanasi etc and are paying respect to their ancestors today.
“Bhishmpitamah” The greatest warrior from Mahabharata was blessed by his father’s souls and cause of that it was impossible to defeat him in war even Lord Krishna was once about to broke his vow of not taking part in war, when he sensed that Bhishmapitamah could not be defeated due to the boon granted by his father’s soul to him on PITRU PAKSHA.
So lets not forget our ancestors today and pay respect to them in Vedic way or just by our own way by remembering and thanking them.
